What is Revenue per Employee?
Revenue per employee divides total company revenue by total full-time equivalents (FTEs). It measures overall organizational productivity, every function, not just go-to-market, and is distinct from new ARR per GTM FTE, which divides net new ARR by GTM headcount only.
Formula
Version v1. See methodology and the public formula repo for sources and change history.
Worked example
Using the default example inputs (Revenue: $10,000,000; Full-time equivalents (FTEs): 80), Revenue per Employee equals $125,000 (Revenue per employee). Total revenue divided by total FTEs measures company-wide productivity. Compare trends period to period; do not mix with net-new ARR per GTM FTE.
What good looks like
Benchmarks vary widely by business model, ACV, and services mix. Trend the ratio over time on consistent headcount scope (include contractors only if finance counts them as FTEs). Pair with gross margin and Rule of 40 rather than chasing a universal dollar target.
Directional guidance only, not a cohort benchmark claim. Premium cohort bands appear when sample thresholds are met for your profile.
FAQ
- What is Revenue per Employee?
- Revenue per employee divides total company revenue by total full-time equivalents (FTEs). It measures overall organizational productivity, every function, not just go-to-market, and is distinct from new ARR per GTM FTE, which divides net new ARR by GTM headcount only.
- What is the Revenue per Employee formula?
- Revenue per employee = Revenue / FTEs
- Revenue per employee vs new ARR per GTM FTE?
- This calculator uses total revenue ÷ total company FTEs. New ARR per GTM FTE uses net new ARR ÷ GTM-only headcount (sales, marketing, SDR, RevOps). They answer different questions, company-wide productivity vs GTM ARR output per rep.
- Who counts in total FTEs?
- Use the same company-wide headcount your finance team reports: typically all employees (and sometimes contractors on FTE-equivalent basis). Do not limit to quota-carrying reps.
- Annual vs quarterly revenue?
- Enter revenue and FTEs for the same period. Annual revenue with average annual FTEs is common for board decks; quarterly works for operating reviews if headcount is measured the same way.
